UK evacuates British Embassy Khartoum staff after military operation in Sudan

Amid growing violence and threats to foreign diplomats in Sudan, the UK government on Sunday evacuated British Embassy Khartoum staff after a military operation.
Sudan’s capital Khartoum is facing heavy infighting between army and paramilitary forces to take over power from the current regime.
“We thank the armed forces for their bravery in conducting this complex operation under extremely challenging circumstances. And (we) commend the courage and commitment of the UK diplomats and embassy staff,” a UK government spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said ‘the safety of all British nationals in Sudan continues to be our utmost priority.
UK PM Rishi Sunak too confirmed military action to evacuate British diplomats and their wards and urged warring factions to ceasefire to allow civilians to leave.
“We are continuing to pursue every avenue to end the bloodshed in Sudan and ensure the safety of British nationals remaining in the country.
I urge the parties to lay down their arms and implement an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to ensure civilians can leave conflict zones. ,” he added.
The UK charge d’affairs at Sudan Embassy Ruth Lawson advised British nationals to remain at home and take shelter.
They are advised contact the British Foreign Office to seek help in evacuation or travel advisories issued by UK government, she added.
