The United Kingdom on Friday called for easing of tensions between Israel and Palestine and de-escalation of tensions at Jerusalem holy sites.
In a statement, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said the government indiscriminate rocket attacks from Palestinian side with the right to self defence of Israel and it was time to de-escalate tensions in the region.
“At the convergence of Passover, Ramadan and Easter, the UK calls for all parties to respect the historic Status Quo arrangements at Jerusalem’s holy sites and cease all provocative action,” he added.
Cleverly said the UK government supports freedom of religion or belief and calls for respect of places of worship.
The government also recognises the role Jordon as custodian of Jerusalem holy sites and condemns violence by Israeli forces at Al Aqsa Mosque.
Cleverly further called on Israeli government to conduct operations at these sites as per international law and said both sides must honour commitments made at Sharm el-Sheikh and Aqaba.
“Peace will only be sustainable if both Israelis and Palestinians recommit themselves to a negotiated settlement, leading to a two-state solution of a secure Israel side by side with a viable Palestinian State,” he added.
