India on Saturday joined the elite club of nations which have Naval Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) capability.

The DRDO and Indian Navy successfully tested sea-based endo-atmospheric missile in Odisha Coast on 21 April 2023.

“The purpose of the trial was to engage and neutralize a hostile ballistic missile threat thereby elevating India into the elite club of Nations having Naval BMD capability,” Indian government said in a statement.

It is worth mentioning here that India has already developed a land-base BMD system to target and neutralize ballistic missiles launched from enemy countries.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh lauded Defence Research and Development Organisation, Indian Navy and other partners for achieving the feat.

India is now capable of full spectrum anti-ballistic missiles protection shield to protect its assets, both at land and at sea.

DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat lauded the teams for making india self-reliance in the development of highly-complex network centric anti-ballistic missile systems.

India’s campaign to develop an indigenous missile defence system had started in the 2000s after Pakistan became a ballistic missile capable nation.

India tested its land based Prithvi Air Defense (PAD) in 2006 and Advanced Air Defense (AAD) system in 2007, thereby joining the leagues of nations as US, Russia and Israel to have BMD capabilities.
