Chandigarh
A child labourer aged just 14 years of age in Patiala got a helping hand from the Punjab government to fulfill his dream of becoming a Mechanical Engineer.
The boy who used to work at a motor repair shop, was rescued in a raid by Punjab Women and Child Development department in association with Bachpan Bachao Andolan.
“After rescue from a mechanic shop, the child expressed a desire to study and become a mechanical Engineer,” Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Baljit Kaur said.
Inspired by his strong will and determination, Kaur contacted Human Rights Mission NGO which had agreed to fund the education of child labourer so he could fulfill his dream.
Kaur said the raid in Patiala was conducted as part of action month against child labour in Punjab and 19 children have rescued in the operation.
“Out of the 19 rescued children, 9 were found to be below the age of 14 while the remaining 9 were adolescents. After thorough verification of their documents, legal actions and rehabilitation measures will be initiated to ensure their well-being,” Kaur added.
She stated that child labour is in violation of children’s rights and dignity with the Punjab government remaining committed to rooting out this evil from society.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the rights and ensure the welfare of children across the state,” she further added.
