United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed the Belfast Agreement (Good Friday) as a ‘precious legacy’ and the most extraordinary political achievement.
Sunak will further highlight the importance of the agreement as the best foundation for stronger and more prosperous Northern Ireland to commemorate its anniversary on Wednesday.
A UK government spokesperson said, “As part of the address to architects and global figures, the PM will say the best way to fulfil the promise of the Belfast Agreement (Good Friday) is to make good on our commitment, to create jobs and opportunities for young people so they can fulfil their dreams and aspirations in the place they call home.”
The Belfast Agreement has led to significant economic progress in Northern Ireland.
Before the signing of the agreement in April 1998, Northern Ireland had the highest unemployment in the UK at 8.4 percent but now it is the second lowest at 2.4 percent.
Sunak will also meet leading architects of the agreement during a Gala Dinner in which Irish and US representatives will also participate.
