Punjab’s Medal winners to finally get promised cash prize after five years

Punjab’s medal winners, who were promised cash prizes for winning laurels for the country, will finally get their due, Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said on Sunday.

Meet Hayer said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will confer Rs 5.94 crore prize money on 1807 players which was pending since the last five years.
The promises cash prizes will be conferred on the opening ceremony of Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan in Bathinda on 29 August.
“Punjab government is constantly striving to create a sports and sportsmen-friendly atmosphere.
The government will award the players with cash prizes, who were earlier deprived of the same 2017 on National Sports Day.
On CM Mann’s instructions, the Sports department has prepared a list of such 1807 medal winners,” he added.

Meet Hayer stated that it had come to the government’s notice that many sportsmen, who despite winning medals, did not receive cash prize money.
After this, CM Mann directed that the Sports department to prepare a list of these players and give them their due rights.
These players have brought glory to the state by winning medals in state, national and international competitions.
Of 1807 players, 997 players will get Rs 1.58 crore for 2017-18, 135 players of 2018-19 will get Rs 47.96 lakh and 287 players of 2019-20 will receive Rs 1.75 crore.

51 players of 2020-21 will be honour with Rs 19.05 lakhs, 203 players of 2021-22 will get Rs 1.32 Cr and 10 medal winners of 36th National Games 2022 will get honour with Rs 41 lakh.
“A new sports policy has been made by the sports department and in the coming years any sportsperson will be given their due respect immediately,” he added.
