Aiming to revive the agriculture sector with tech, research and industry support, Punjab on Tuesday held consultations with Croatia and Sri Lankan delegates to make agriculture profitable.
The consultations were attended by Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, President of Croatia Business Chamber of Commerce Mayank Jagwani, Vice President Shweta, Nikola and Sri Lankan delegate, Jaya Kumar.
Khudian said the government is vying to make the agriculture sector profitable and boost farmers’ income in the state with such discussions.
“Farmers of Punjab are very hardworking and their tireless efforts have brought the title “Food Bowl of the Country’ to the state.
But now, the state needs the support of technologies, research and industry to further strengthen the agricultural economy.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led Punjab government is striving hard to bring diversification in the agriculture sector to wean away farmers from the vicious cycle of two crops.
The state has also been making concerted efforts to preserve and increase exports of perishable fruits and vegetables, besides ensuring marketing of these staples,” he added.
He asked Markfed officials to prepare and issue a list of units that helps in the preservation and export of perishable fruits and vegetables.
He invited the delegates for knowledge sharing and investment in the agriculture sector of the state while asserting that Punjab is eager to work with Croatia and Sri Lanka to boost the prosperity of farmers.
The delegates said they were keenly interested to work with Punjab and there was a huge demand for Basmati Rice, Honey and Turmeric in their countries.
A Croatian delegation is likely to visit Punjab in November this year to further explore possibilities for cooperation in the agriculture sector.
