Punjab hikes freedom fighters’ pension to Rs 11,000 per month
Chandigarh
Punjab government on Tuesday hiked the freedom fighters’ pension from Rs 9,400 to Rs 11,000 per month, State Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema said.
Cheema said the decision to hike freedom fighters’ pension will be implemented from 1 August 2023 under the AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
“Approving the proposal received from the Freedom Fighters Welfare Department in this regard, the Finance Department has approved the annual budget required for the same.
This decision will directly benefit 545 beneficiaries, including freedom fighters themselves, widows of deceased freedom fighters or their unmarried and unemployed daughters and sons,” he added.
Cheema stated that earlier, the pension amount was hiked from Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,400 from 1 April 2021. Now in the wake of increased inflation, the decision has been taken to increase it further to Rs 11000 per month.
“We are proud of our freedom fighters due to whom the Punjabis are prominently mentioned among those who contributed maximum in the freedom struggle of India.
Although we cannot pay back for the sacrifices made by those patriots, the Punjab government under the leadership of CM Mann is committed to honouring them,” he further added.
