The governments of Haryana and Punjab seem to be at loggerheads again, this time over the issue of the stake or affiliation of Haryana colleges with the Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh.

While Haryana CM M L Khattar and Governor Banwari Lal Purohit were in favour of granting affiliation as it will be beneficial to Punjab University, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann completely ruled out the idea.

In the meeting with his counterpart and Governor, Mann reiterated his government’s firm commitment to avert any change in PU’s nature and character.

“PU is the heritage of Punjab and any sort of change in it will not be tolerated,” he added.

Mann said the premier educational institute has an emotional place in the hearts of the people on account of historical, cultural and provincial reasons.

PU is a symbol of Punjab’s legacy and is synonymous with the name of the state, he further asserted.

Meanwhile, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar said ‘under the Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966, the state’s colleges and regional centres were affiliated with PU’.

However, the affiliation was abolished after a notification was issued to this effect in 1973.

“In today’s era, the colleges of the states are also affiliated with international universities.

The aim of the National Education Policy is that all educational institutions should cooperate in the country’s progress and further strengthen the mutual relations of all the states.

Therefore, affiliation of colleges of Haryana should be done with Panjab University, Chandigarh,” Khattar added.

Governor Banwari Lal Purohit too echoed Haryana CM’s views and said the issue of affiliation of Haryana colleges with Panjab University is not a big issue.

It is possible as a collaboration between two neighboring states will definitely be a good start.

“Today a lot of development is taking place in the field of education.

The governments should work to make education accessible to rural areas as well,” he said while urging both CMs to resolve the issue with mutual consent.
