‘Outright lies’, Indian min denies ex-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s claims of bids to influence social media
New Delhi
‘Outright lies’, said Indian Minister of Electronics and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday while denying former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s claims of attempts to influence the social media platform.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in a tweet, said Jack Dorsey was making attempts to brush aside the dubious history of Twitter as the social media platforms continuously violated Indian law from 2020-22.
“It was only in June 2022 when they finally complied. No one went to jail nor was Twitter shutdown,” he added.
The Indian Minister said Twitter under Dorsey didn’t accept the sovereignty of Indian laws and it behaved as if they don’t apply to him or the social media platform.

He cited the example of farmers’ protests in January 2021 when there was lot of misinformation on Twitter, even fake reports of genocide by the Indian government.
The government acted within its rights to get the info removed for it could have inflamed the situation but instead of complying with the government’s orders, they ‘seemed to have problem with it’.
This was despite the fact that Twitter, itself, removed such posts in its host country, the US without even the government’s interference. But no one was sent to jail for such a biased approach to critical situations.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government’s policy is clear for all companies operating in India, that is to ensure compliance with laws to ensure the Internet is safe, trusted, accountable,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, Jack Dorsey, in an interview, had claimed that the Indian government exerted pressure to get dissenting voices of citizens and journalists silenced during farmers’ protests.
The Indian government threatened to raid Twitter employees and even shut down the social media platform if it didn’t comply with directives, Dorsey had alleged.
