Ofsted will start inspecting supported accommodations for the safety of children aged 16 to 17 years and on Monday launched a consultation for it.

Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) is the non-ministerial department of His Majesty’s government that reports to Parliament.

The consultation by Ofsted will seek suggestions from the supported accommodation sector on how these should be inspected. The suggestions are invited from care providers, children and the wider sector.

The consultation will continue till 8 September and based on it, the inspections will be carried out from April 2024.

Ofsted aims to improve the delivery of services, positive experiences, timely action in case of any improvements needed and identify weaknesses or concerns.

“This proposal reflects the unique context and wide scope of the supported accommodation, providing a nuanced statement of quality across extremely diverse provisions.

We will use the learning from the first round of inspections to inform longer-term inspection arrangements in the future, including how we make judgments,” an Ofsted official said.

Ofsted will give 2-days notice for inspection of such facilities and will check the overall experiences and progress of children.

It will also ascertain as to how well children are helped and protected, and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.
