Manipur women’s sexual assault: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube remove video after govt order
New Delhi
After the Indian government’s directive on the removal of a video of two Manipur women being paraded naked, Facebook (Meta), Twitter, YouTube and Google have taken down the video from the internet.
The Indian government has reportedly directed to remove the horrific video of Manipur women as it could lead to further flaring up of tensions and violence in the state.
The horrifying video of two Manipur women is said to be of 4 May 2023, a day after on May 3 when the BJP government in the state extended ST status to Meitei community.
The tribal Kuki population had started protests against the Manipur government’s move, terming it as an attack on their rights.
This led to the flaring of tensions into violence and resulted in clashes between the BJP-ruled valley-majority Meitei and hill-majority Kuki tribes.
The video shows a group of men parading the women naked while some molested them. It was being alleged that the women were molested and dragged to a field where they were allegedly gang-raped.
On Friday, a TV channel reportedly talked to the husband of one of the victims who is reportedly a retired Indian Army personnel with Assam Regiment.
He expressed dissent on the incident and said he had served warzones as Kargil to serve the country but the incident had left him shaken.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too condemned the violence and said that the guilty won’t be spared.
