Manipur women’s nude video: PM Modi condemns incident, says guilty won’t be spared
New Delhi
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condemned the horrifying incident of Manipur women paraded naked on video and said the guilty won’t be spared.
This is the first-ever statement by PM Modi since the violence flared up in the violence-hit state of Manipur as the government extended Tribal Status to the BJP-backed Meitei community.
The tribal Kuki population had started protests against the Manipur government’s move which flared into violence two months back.
Addressing the media before the start of the monsoon session of Parliament, PM Modi said, “I want to assure the country that the guilty behind the viral video of women stripped naked won’t be spared.
The accused will be punished as per law as what happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven.”
He said his heart is filled with anger as he stands before the temple of democracy and the Manipur incident is shameful for any civilized nation. ‘The whole country is ashamed of it,’ the PM added.
The horrifying video of two Manipur women being paraded naked is said to be of 4 May 2023, a day after clashes broke out between the BJP-ruled valley-majority Meitei and hill-majority Kuki tribes.
The video is drawing widespread condemnation and calls for action as it was alleged that they were molested and dragged to a field where they were allegedly gang-raped.
However, the PM also referred to incidents in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and appealed to all states to implement the rule of law strictly.
“I appeal to all CMs to strengthen law and order, especially with regard to our mothers and sisters and take the strictest action. Be it Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh or Manipur, in every corner of India, we must rise above politics and take action against heinous crimes,” he further added.
