Maharashtra: 15 dead, 3 injured in a freak accident on Samruddhi Express Highway in Thane with 5-6 more persons feared to be trapped under the debris

Atleast 15 people have died while 3 others suffered injuries in a freak accident on Samruddhi Express Highway near Shahpur in Thane in the southern Indian state of Maharashtra.

As per reports, the accident took place in the wee hours on Tuesday during the construction of Samruddhi Express Highway Phase 3 near Shahpur in Thane.
Police officials said the incident took place after a girder-launching machine collapsed during the construction of the highway.
The crane was reportedly hoisting a girder for the under-construction bridge on Samruddhi E-way when it collapsed from a height of 200 metres.
A NDRF was rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations at the accident and they have pulled out 15 bodies from the debris.
Three persons suffered injuries in the freak accident and they were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
The NDRF team suspects that 5-6 more persons are buried under the debris of the crane and efforts are being to rescue them.

A case has been registered in this regard and the police are carrying out a probe to find out the exact cause behind the accident.
