Magnus Carlsen wins first Chess World Cup title as Praggnanandhaa loses in tie-breaker

World No 1 chess player Magnus Carlsen on Thursday won his first Chess World Cup title after 18-year-old Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa failed to up his game in a tie-breaker.

Praggnanandhaa put up a good show that resulted in the FIDE World Cup game with Carlsen ending in a tie.

In the tie-breaker, Carlsen showed his masterclass and defeated Praggnanandhaa by 1.5-0.5 points.

Announcing the results, the International Chess Federation tweeted, “Magnus Carlsen is the winner of the 2023 FIDE World Cup! 

Magnus prevails against Praggnanandhaa in a thrilling tiebreak and adds one more prestigious trophy to his collection! Congratulations.”

Indian prodigy had earlier defeated World no 2 Hikaru Makamura and no 3 Fabiano Caruano to set a finals date with Magnus Carlsen.
