Kejriwal asks Haryana to stop water release to control flooding in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday asked the Haryana government to stop the release of water into Yamuna River to control flooding in the national capital.

To assert his demand after getting alarmed over the flood-like situation in Delhi, Kejriwal also wrote a letter to Indian Home Minister Amit Shah for the same.

“Yamuna River has already reached 207.55 mts which is way above the danger mark of 205.33 metres at the Old Railway Bridge. It is likely to reach 207.72 mts by tonight, the highest in the history recorded so far.

Till now the highest recorded level of the Yamuna was 207.49 mts which was recorded in 1978,” he added.

He said Delhi has not received rain for the last three days but the water level in Yamuna River is rising due to water release from Hathni Kund Barrage in Haryana.

He appealed to the Centre to release only controlled levels of water from Hathni Kund so Delhi doesn’t flood further and as Delhi will host G20 meet soon and it won’t send a good message to the world.

The CM said according to the latest estimates of the Central Water Commission, the level of Yamuna will reach 207.72 metres tonight.

“I humbly request you that if possible the water from Hathni Kund barrage should be released in limited and controlled volumes,” he stated in a letter addressed to Amit Shah.
