Joint Relief: New drug delivery system to cure rheumatoid arthritis

In a major news for persons suffering with joint pains, Indian scientists has come up with a new drug delivery system to cure rheumatoid arthritis.
Called synthesised biocompatible therapeutic nano-micelle drug delivery system that combines anti-inflammatory drugs is showing positive results in lab tests.
The drug system can not only cure rheumatoid arthritis by restoring cartilage integrity that ensures flexibility in bones but also provide much wanted pain relief.
The discovery has been made by scientist Dr Rehan Khan along with senior research fellow Akshay Vyawahare of institute of Nano Science and Technology, Mohali.
They explored the potential of the anti-inflammatory FDA-approved drug 9-aminoacridine (9AA) and the natural compound caffeic acid (CA).
(The CA is generally found in coffee or wine and is reported to possess significant anti-arthritic potential).
These compounds are conjugated to nano micelles, an amphiphilic molecule that forms spherical structure when immersed in water, for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
“When administered, site-specific inhibition regulates inflammatory mechanisms by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines.
The nano micelle itself has the potential to provide therapeutic effects.
But when combined with an anti-inflammatory drug, it showed enhanced potential to cure rheumatoid arthritis experimentally by inhibiting joint damage and cartilage degradation.
This drug delivery system is simple, cost-effective, safe, and has significant translational potential,” Khan said.
The drug formulation has been tested on rats and it has the potential of providing relief to patients by suppressing the disease severity of Rheumatoid arthritis.
