Dev Shah becomes 2023 US Scripps National Spelling Bee champ

Dev Shah, an 8th grader from Largo in Florida of Indian origin, on Friday correctly spelled the word ‘Psammophile’ to become the 2023 US Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.
Studying at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School, 14-year-old Dev Shah spelled tough words such as ardoise, exhortation, chiromancy, schistorrhachis, bathypitotmeter in 15 rounds of the Spelling Bee contest.

His winning word? Psammophile,” Scripps National Spelling Bee said in a statement on Twitter.

He had earlier contested in the US Scripps National Spelling Bee champion in 2019 and then 2021 but was placed jointly at 51st and 76th place respectively.
Apart from spending time with family and friends, Dev Shah loves reading, playing tennis, cello, and solving math problems.

Shah loves watching historical fiction movies and reading historical fiction books and engages in regular exercises to rewind and unwind.
