IIT Zanzibar, Tanzania: IIT Madras to set up first ever campus outside India

Zanzibar, Tanzania will soon become the site of the first-ever IIT campus to be set up outside India, courtesy an MoU between India, the Tanzanian government and IIT Madras.
Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the MoU was signed today to set up IIT Zanzibar by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras.
“This is the first ever IIT campus to be set up outside India. It is reflective of the longstanding friendship between India and Tanzania.

It is also a reminder of the focus India places on building people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South,” he added.
Pradhan said this marks a historic beginning towards the internationalization of higher education.
Under PM Narendra Modi’s initiative to strengthen South-South cooperation, it will also forge stronger people-to-people ties with Africa.
Besides, the National Education Policy is making way for knowledge to become a key component of bilateral relations while furthering global good, he added.
