Gorge Dixon to get plaque at Halifax Museum for being Canada’s Person of National Historic Significance

Boxing legend Gorge Dixon will get a plaque in his name at Africville Museum at Halifax as the government recognised him as Canada’s Person of National Historic Significance.

Gorge Dixon (1870-1908) was the first-ever black boxer and the first Canadian national to win a world title.

Dixon was known for his speed, stamina and defense in boxing circles and he was among the top boxers of the 19th century.

Overcoming racial discrimination and other prejudices, Dixon won the World Bantamweight title in 1892, making him the first black athlete to win any world championship title.

Canada’s Science, Innovation and Industry Minister Steven Guilbeault’s parliamentary secretary Andy Fillmore with dedicate the plaque at Halifax Museum on 12 June.

The event is being organised by Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada at Africville Museum at Halifax in Nova Scotia.

Fillmore, on behalf of Steven Guilbeault, will also make the announcement on the recognition of Dixon as a Person of National Historic Significance of Canada.

It is worth noting that Dixon was born on 29 July 1870 in Nova Scotia and he used to box in the flyweight category of boxing.

Popularly called ‘little chocolate’ for being just 5ft3inches and 39 kgs when he started his professional career, Dixon is credited for developing the shadowboxing technique.
