Gender, Race Violence in Canada: Govt announces funding to empower Indigenous women, LGBTQ

As cases of missing and murders of Indigenous women and LGBTQ is becoming a national crisis, the Canadian government on Friday announced $2.6 million funding to end gender and raced based crimes.
The funding to 11 projects run by Indigenous women was announced by Canada’s Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller.
The Indigenous women’s organizations with unique knowledge and expertise work for the best protection and empowerment of women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people across Canada.

The projects span six provinces and two territories and support Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ people via the gathering of knowledge, environment scans and data collection.
The funding is part of the 2021 national action plan for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people across Canada.
The action plan was developed in collaboration with the families of survivors, Indigenous women’s organizations and Canada’s provincial and territorial governments.
Commenting on the development, Marc Miller said, “To end the national crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada, survivors and families of victims must remain at the center of this work.
