As more people are opting for electric vehicles, the first ever US-Canada EV corridor was on Wednesday announced to facilitate people in cross border travel between the two countries.
The announcement was made by Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra and US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
The US-Canada EV corridor, aimed at environment conservation, will have charging stations at every 50 miles and it will include at least one fast charger with combined charging ports.
The corridor runs from Kalamazoo in Michigan in the US to Quebec City in Canada. It passes through tunnel in Detroit to Highway 401, 20 and 40 through cities of Toronto, Quebec and Montreal.
One of the busiest passenger and trade corridor between the US and Canada, it is the hub for vehicle manufacturing and a key component of Canada’s national transport system.
The EV corridor will help in adoption of zero emission vehicles in both countries as well as reducing pollution on roads, job creation and economic growth.
Canadian Minister Omar Alghabra said the US and Canada have entered into world’s largest energy trading ties, providing platform to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
“This first cross-border alternative fuel corridor will help drivers to travel across the border and charge or refuel worry-free.
It contributes to bringing us another step closer to making our air cleaner while helping people save money on traditional fuels,” he added.
US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the two countries enjoys productive partnership in transport sector and it has led to first even US-Canada EV corridor.
With historic investments in EV infrastructure from the Biden administration and the Canadian government, a new generation of good-paying manufacturing jobs is being created.
This has made it ‘possible for drivers everywhere to reap the benefits and savings of these vehicles while helping us fight climate change’, he added.
It is worth noting that Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden in March 2023 has announced to develop first ever EV corridor with charging facilities for cross border travel.
