Drug Overdose Cure: US okays direct sale of naloxone nasal spray
The Community News/New York
As opioid based chemicals are becoming a major cause of drug overdose deaths among youths, the US has okayed direct sale of Narcan, a naloxone nasal spray.
The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved over the counter or online sale of Narcan, 4 milligram (mg) naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray.
It is worth noting that Naloxone is the standard treatment for opioid overdose and it rapidly reverses the effects of opioids in the user’s body.
The US FDA’s decision means that the life-saving medication is available for sale without prescription online or in common stores as drug, grocery or convenience.
Meanwhile, other formulations or dosages of naloxone for reverse effects of opioids overdose will be available only on prescription.
However, the dateline for Narcan’s availability hasn’t been confirmed by the manufacturer as yet.
It is worth noting that the US has reported 1,02,740 deaths due to opioid drug overdoses, especially Fentanyl in the period from November 2021 to October 2022.
