Delhi HC rejects petition challenging trial exemption to Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia
New Delhi
Delhi High Court on Saturday rejected the petition, seeking intervention into trial exemption given to top Indian wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia for the 19th Asian Games.
It is worth noting that Asian Games are being organised in Hangzhou in China from 10th-25th September, for which ace Indian wrestlers had been given direct entry.
The direct entry to Vinesh Phogat (53 kg) and Bajrang Punia (65 kg) was granted by the Indian Olympic Association’s Adhoc Committee.
This meant that other wrestlers will have to earn their places in the Indian squad for Asian Games by competing in selection trials.
Delhi HC Justice Subramaniam Prasad has dismissed the petition of U-20 world champion Anand Panghal and U-23 Asian champion Sujit Kalkal who challenged the direct entry to Phogat and Punia.
It is worth mentioning here that Panghal and Kalkal had filed a petition in Delhi on 19 July challenging the IOA decision and seeking a fair selection process for all.
In the plea, the budding played had pleaded to the court to set aside the IOA Adhoc Committee’s decision and conduct trials for 53kg and 65 kg weight categories too.
Meanwhile, Antim Panghal won in 53 kg weight category trials at IG Stadium, New Delhi on Saturday afternoon and she will be the standby player for Vinesh Phogat in the category.
