D Gukesh surpasses Viswanathan Anand to become highest rated Indian player after becoming the second youngest chess grandmaster in the world in 2019

Mumbai

Indian Chess Grandmaster D Gukesh has surpassed the five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand in the International Federation of Chess (FIDE) rankings to become the highest-rated player.

17-year-old Gukesh achieved the feat after defeating Ikandarov of Azerbaijan in Chess World Cup at Baku on Thursday.

With the win, he gained 2.5 points to move to 2754 points in FIDE live ratings and moved passed compatriot Anand.

Gukesh now ranks 9th in the FIDE ratings while Anand who remained in the top 10 rankings since 1987 moved to 10th place.

Born on 29 May 2006, Gukesh is the second youngest chess grandmaster in the world at the age of 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days in January 2019.

Gukesh’s rise in the chess world is notable and he is considered one of India’s most promising young talents.

He had several impressive performances in national and international tournaments with his progress closely followed by chess enthusiasts and experts.

Tamilnadu CM MK Stalin congratulated Gukesh for the achievement and said he is an inspiration for young talent everywhere.
