A trial court has sentenced a man to a 5-year jail term in the alleged abetment of suicide of a Puducherry MBBS student in May 2012.

A CBI spokesperson said the man identified as S Pradeep of Thirukannur has been awarded a 5-year jail term along with a fine of Rs 5,000.

A Puducherry court has held Pradeep guilty in the case of suicide of a 4th MBBS student identified as Priyadarshini.

Pradeep and Priyadarshini, who was pursuing an MBBS course from Puducherry Medical College and Hospital, were allegedly in a relationship.

Priyadarshini was having a love affair with Pradeep but later, he allegedly started avoiding her, leading to differences between them.

The accused had allegedly sent an SMS to her and cast aspersions on her character which proved a breaking point for MBBS student.

This led to Priyadarshini committing suicide on 16 May 2012 by hanging through the ceiling fan of her hostel room.

The case was handed over to CBI by the Madras High Court in April 2015 on a petition filed by her father.

The CBI investigations had led to Pradeep being found guilty of abetment of suicide and it led to his conviction, the spokesperson added.
