Corona warrior PRTC driver gets Rs 50 lakh compensation from Punjab govt

The family of Manjit Singh, a PRTC driver who died while transporting Sikh pilgrims from Nanded in Maharashtra to Punjab, on Friday got Rs 50 lakh as compensation.

The compensation was granted as per the AAP leaders’ commitment after Singh’s death during Covid pandemic on 26 April 2020.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann handed over the cheque to Singh’s mother and lashed at former Congress government for giving miniscule compensation to the Corona warrior’s family.

“The PRTC driver was a frontline corona warrior who laid down his life while serving the people.

Singh had died of massive heart attack while on special duty to fetch stranded Sikh pilgrims Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded amid Covid 19 pandemic lockdown,” he added.

The miniscule compensation by the then Congress government had led to protests by AAP leaders in Punjab who had promised to give Rs 50 lakh compensation to Corona warriors.

“After assuming power, we started the process to grant Rs 50 lakh as compensation to Corona warrior and the promise was today fulfilled while handing over the cheque,” he added.

Manjit was a resident of Badbar village of Barnala district and he died at the age of 38 years while performing duties during the Covid pandemic.
