CBSE asks affiliated schools to go for teaching in Indian languages

New Delhi

Aiming to provide cognitive advantage to students, the CBSE has asked affiliated schools to facilitate education in Indian languages other than English.

The CBSE’s directions came as Indian Education Ministry has asked NCERT to prepare textbooks in 22 native languages as enumerated in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution.

The move is also the result of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 which emphasizes multilingual education as it provides significant cognitive advantages to young learners.

Besides, higher education is too gearing up for the change as textbooks of technical, medical, law, vocational and skill education have adapted to the change to Indian languages.

“Therefore, the schools affiliated to CBSE need to play a vital role in this great endeavour by offering education through Indian languages,” Joseph Emmanuel, CBSE Director Academics, said.

Emmanuel said the initiatives of the Indian Education Ministry and NCERT have prompted the CBSE to facilitate education through native languages.

“The CBSE affiliated schools may consider using Indian languages, as enumerated in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution from the foundational stage to Class XII in addition to English.

Schools may explore the available resources, consult with experts in the field, and collaborate with other schools to share best practices to make multilingual education in CBSE schools a reality,” he added.

It is worth noting that NEP calls for utilizing the native languages or mother tongue as the medium of instruction for classes till 5th grade but preferably extending to Grade 8 and beyond.
