Canada grounds Russian cargo aircraft at Toronto Airport
Ottawa
The Canadian government on Saturday grounded Russian registered cargo aircraft at Toronto Airport citing the Special Economic Measures Act.
The seizure was announced by Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly who said the cargo aircraft, Antonov 124 is believed to be owned by a Russian company sanctioned by the government.
It is believed to be owned Volga-Dnepr Airlines LLC and Volga-Dnepr Group which were recently sanctioned by Canada for their role in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.
The action is being seen as Canada’s action under the seizure and forfeiture regime to pressurize Vladimir Putin to stop the war by hitting hard on the economy and limiting resources for war.
“This is the first physical asset seized by the Government of Canada under this regime, and second overall seized and restrained under the Special Economic Measures Act,” Melanie Joly said.
She added that Canada is sending a clear message that there is no place to hide after profiteering from the Russian regime’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

“Canada has been there to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom since day one and we will continue to be there through their victory to aid in their reconstruction efforts,” Joly added.
