Britain intercepts Russian bomber jets near Scotland’s airspace

Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) on Monday intercepted two Russian bomber jets north of the Shetland Islands in Scotland’s airspace.

As Russian long-range maritime patrol bombers passed close to Nato’s northern airspace, RAF launched a quick reaction alert.

The RAF Typhoons monitored Russian bomber jets as they passed by UK’s airspace to protect it as per NATO’s sanctions.

NATO has imposed sanctions on Russia for its war on Ukraine and alleged war crimes committed during the conflict.

UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said “RAF crews at Lossiemouth maintain a constant watch over UK airspace.

They are always ready to take action at a moment’s notice to keep our country safe.

Pilots launched their Typhoon jets to intercept two Russian long-range bombers this morning.

They monitored them as they passed north of the Shetland Islands, ready to counter any potential threat to UK territory.

A Voyager tanker was also scrambled and remained airborne for the duration of the mission to offer air-to-air refueling.

This ensured the Typhoons could remain in the air for the extended period necessary to complete their mission.”

The Typhoons and Voyager have returned to their base and these are kept ready to respond to any future intrusions.
