Breath out gastric disorders: Indian scientists find new method to detect peptic ulcers
New Delhi
Pyro-Breath, a simple analysis of breathing patterns as compared to invasive painful endoscopy could be the solution to finding gastric disorders as well as peptic ulcers in the coming days.
The new device makes use of machine learning to extract correct info on dyspepsia, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers.
Using complex breathomics datasets generated from exhaled breath of a patient, Pyro-Breath analyzes the breathing patterns of patients with that of healthy persons.

S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata Prof Manik Pradhan has this device along with breathograms or breathprint signatures of healthy; with that of people with gastric issues.
The study findings have been published in the European Journal of Mass Spectroscopy according to which, the device can clearly diagnose specific gastric issues in a patient’s body. And that too of early and late-stage gastric conditions or precise transition from one state to another.
“The breath patterns generated from the patients are irrespective of the patient’s basal metabolic rates (BMR) and other confounding factors such as age, sex, smoking habits, or lifestyle,” Pradhan said.
The invention could prove a game changer as peptic ulcer detection at early stages remains a cause of concern for experts at the global level.
The present systems fail to detect duodenal or gastric ulcers early due to the lack of symptoms, resulting in poor diagnosis or reversal of the disease.

It is worth mentioning here that Pradhan who is working on the breath analysis method recently unveiled the missing chinks i.e. gastric conditions and pattern recognition-based clustering.
Built by Pradhan and his team, the device has been validated and patented after use in a hospital environment and given to a startup for commercial production.
