Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday lauded the Telangana government for its revolutionary model for holistic water conservation.
Citing the Telangana model for water conservation on World Environment Day, Mann said it is a revolutionary step in ensuring proper groundwater recharge.
The Telangana government has constructed small dams in villages that is helping in groundwater conservation which has resulted in its level going up by 4 meters.
Jalandhar people rejected divisive, negative politics: Bhagwant Mann
“In our sacred land Gurus, Punjab saints in Gurbani have always taught to consider ‘Pawan Guru (Air as a teacher), Paani Pitaah (water as father) and Mata Dharat’ (land as a mother).
We seem to have forgotten these lessons but now we must imbibe the teachings of Gurbani in letter and spirit to restore the glory of the state,” Bhagwant Mann added.
He criticised the opposition parties for ignoring environmental issues and stated that air, land and water were not significant to them for these don’t have votes.
This massive neglect resulted in pollution and environmental degradation and caused irreparable loss to society, he alleged, adding but now AAP government is tending to these burning issues.
He expressed deep concern over depleting groundwater levels and said almost all blocks are in the dark zone due to reckless pumping that needed to curb now.
For this, the Punjab government has started an initiative for the optimum utilization of canal water as only 33-34% of water is being used now and the aim is to get it up to 60%.

If Punjab starts utilizing 60% of canal water, nearly 4 lakh of 14 lakh tubewells can be stopped from extracting groundwater, he added.
