Shimla
Efforts to set up a bigger zoo in Bankhandi in Kangra district got a boost as the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has given prior permission for it.
The decision marks a momentous step towards enriching wildlife conservation efforts and enhancing the tourism experience in the region.
“Establishment of a Large Zoo at Bankhandi in Kangra is one of the dream projects of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu as a part of a grand scheme to make Kangra Himachal’s ‘Tourism Capital’.
Himachal government in collaboration with wildlife experts and conservationists has dedicatedly worked on this proposal.
Besides, it is being ensured that it will adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare, safety, and environmental sustainability,” HP Forest Department PRO Saroj Verma said.
Verma said the setting up of a bigger zoo will boost tourism, create employment opportunities and contribute to socio-economic development.
Rajiv Kumar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF) said the proposal for a bigger zoo was evaluated in CZA’s 108 Technical Committee meeting in June 2023 after which approval was accorded.
Bankhandi Zoo in Kangra is envisioned to be a world-class facility that will house a diverse range of animal species native to Himachal Pradesh and other regions.
It will serve as an exceptional platform for visitors to engage with wildlife, observe their natural behaviors, and develop a deeper understanding of their ecological significance.
Through various exhibits and interactive programs, the zoo aims to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting natural habitats, he added.
