An Invention for Smartphone Addicts: South Korea installs traffic lights on ground
Seoul
As the younger generation has become Smartphone Addicts, South Korea has decided to install traffic lights on the ground to ensure the safety of netizens who remain glued to their phone screens.
The South Korean government’s move seemed to be aimed at new-age zombies who can’t leave their smartphone screen unattended, even at traffic signals and this sometimes causes accidents.
It has been seen that netizens’ gaze remains focused on mobile phones whenever they are traffic signals and some don’t even bother to look at traffic lights installed on poles.
This has prompted the authorities to install lights on pedestrian paths on zebra crossings at traffic signals so that Smartphone Addicts can notice green lights even when they are glued to phone screens.
A pilot project was launched in Seol in March 2019 and after getting an overwhelming response, the model was approved for major cities in November 2022.
The pilot project was required after many smartphone addicts met with accidents as they stepped into heavy lights without noticing traffic signals.
The South Korean government has also launched an alert system that sends notifications to mobile junkies if they are about to step into the traffic.
