Amritsar Improvement Trust lawyer booked for demanding bribe

Gautam Majithia, a lawyer with Amritsar Improvement Trust, was on Thursday booked for allegedly demanding a bribe for releasing compensation for government-acquired land.
A Punjab Vigilance official said the arrest of Amritsar Improvement Trust lawyer was part of a campaign against corruption on the directions of CM Bhagwant Mann.
Gautam Majithia was booked for receiving a bribe of Rs 8 lakh from Amritsar’s Pratap Avenue resident Jatinder Singh.

In his complaint, Jatinder Singh alleged that Majithia had demanded Rs 20 lakh bribe for releasing additional compensation for 20 bigha land that was acquired by the Trust on 25 March 2022.
Singh had filed a case in the court for adequate compensation for the acquired land and the court had ordered the Trust to pay 20 percent additional compensation.
After receiving the bribe demand, Singh filed a complaint on the Anti-Corruption helpline of the Punjab government after which a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered.
The VB sleuths have started a manhunt as the accused is absconding the after the incident and further investigations in the matter are on.
